The Cultivated Kitchen | Martin Moore

As a household grows, requirements and style preferences inevitably change over time. With their grown-up children away at university and hectic young family life behind them, it was the ideal opportunity for the owners to remodel the house in its entirety to reflect a calmer lifestyle. The brief was for sophisticated simplicity, and they looked to Martin Moore to create a perfectly refined open-plan kitchen in which they could comfortably cook, relax, and entertain.

A relatively pared-back approach was taken for the kitchen layout, with elegant furniture and luxurious materials guiding the design. Andrew Wartnaby, senior designer at Martin Moore, worked closely with the interior designer client and suggested the New Deco collection as it suited her restrained design ethos. Inspired by the craftsmen and architects of the 1930’s, the collection features geometric lines and grand, freestanding pieces. In this kitchen, zoning is a key feature with the long linear cooking zone keeping the space sleek with a feeling of openness, and the clean, uncomplicated look of the cabinetry is further elevated by a modern colour palette of cool grey and blue green. The island, hand painted in Dark Forest, injects a pop of colour into the space, echoing the subtle blue veining of the striking marble splashback opposite.

Martin Moore’s iconic kitchen mantle is framed either side by Gaggenau ovens for pleasing symmetry and culinary convenience, with the ovens, hob and sink adopting the time-tested triangle layout. Either side of the central island sits two capacious, freestanding cupboards with ample space for crockery and ingredients, making prepping, cooking and serving a convenient and pleasurable experience.

The kitchen is packed with clever design details: a parquet wood floor is complemented by walnut cupboard interiors and stylish wooden furniture, and luxurious gold metal finishes harmonise with them. As an interior designer with a love of mid-century furniture and travelling, the owner has introduced her style through artwork, furniture and accessories. Sightlines to the garden and pool are kept clear with seamless plaster downlights rather than pendant lighting over the island. A statement chandelier adds a dramatic finishing touch to the dining zone.

Building on their successful relationship, the clients commissioned Martin Moore to create a sleek utility room, custom bookshelves, bedroom wardrobes, and panelling. Always bespoke and expertly made to measure by craftsmen in its Yorkshire workshops, Martin Moore designs beautiful furniture for the entire home.
